I strongly believe that being born in the South makes you naturally hospitable. Now, there are some who are most hospitable than others, but I believe that deep down inside of us Southern girls there is that ingredient of Southern hospitality. Even though it’s true that your wedding day is all about you, let’s not let go of our Southern hospitality ways…no matter how big the Bridezilla gets! This week I’ve been perusing the online wedding world for different ways you can make your guests feel at home on your wedding day.
During the ceremony:
If you’re going to have an summer outdoor wedding, there’s two main things you should always keep in mind. First, and foremost, YOU NEED A RAIN BACK UP PLAN! Second, your love and the summer sun will be competing in radiance. Therefore, you don’t want your guests to be blinded and miss all the wedding ceremony bliss. Provide them stylish sunglasses to wear so that they don’t miss a thing….especially the kiss!

But while you’re mind is on the possibility of rain…I know that you’ve envisioned your perfect wedding under that special tree. You’re probably thinking, “A little rain won’t hurt anyone. I’m saying my vows under that tree…rain or shine!” Ok, honey, I hear you. But don’t make your guests suffer through it. They’d enjoy your wedding better if they weren’t getting wet. Think about setting out baskets of matching umbrellas in case of rain. It will keep your guests mostly dry and can make for some pretty good pictures. Even if the rain doesn’t come, guests could still use the umbrellas for shade if natural shade isn’t provided.

Southern heat can be unbearable at times. Think about providing your guests fans and cold water bottles to avoid anyone passing out.

And of course, no one likes getting a sunburn. So why not provide some sunscreen for your guests in case they forgot to put some on before they left. Also, while we’re in the pharmacy aisle, throw in some bug spray to avoid those pesky mosquitos that love a good wedding.

Regardless of whether your wedding is outside or inside, tears of joy will be streaming down the freshly made faces of each old and new relative and friend. Don’t let their mascara running make for an awkward picture. Be sure to offer tissues or monogrammed handkerchiefs before the ceremony.

During the Reception:
Who wants to dance in 6 inch heels when there is dancing to be done?! I’m pretty sure not all your guests can pull a Beyoncé, so think about having a basket of “dancing shoes” ready for when the DJ opens the dance floor for the party to get started. Your guests (and their feet) will thank you!

It’s always hospitable to provide hospitality baskets in every bathroom for your guests. I can’t stress this enough! I’m to the point of obsession when it comes to taking care of your guests. Stuff happens at weddings: wine will spill on cousin Tina’s blush dress, Uncle Larry’s pits will start pouring rivers any minute, and your best friend Alyssa just found something in common with one of the groomsmen. Don’t leave them wanting to run to the nearest Walgreens when they could have everything they need in the nearest bathroom. Please, oh please, at least think about it!

After the wedding:
I got a good laugh from this last suggestion! It’s funny, but oh so practical. If everyone has been partying hard all night long, half of your guest are probably going to wake up with an awful hangover. Don’t be to blame for this. Provide your guests with a “Hangover Helper” to help them get through the morning after.

There are many other ways of showing hospitality at your wedding. These are a few to get you started. Don’t over look these details. If they didn’t get you a gift before the wedding, after showing them a little Southern hospitality, be for darn sure that you’ll get something good in the mail from those guests!!
